I feel this battle must be fought, so suggesting to use RTR/IP-SLA could
be counter-productive :-|
but anyway: RTR/IP-SLA with udpEcho or other non-ICMP probes are able to
compensate for any local processing delays (by using a time-stamp on the
packet buffer done by the driver), so even if it takes as much as a
second for the packet to be processed by IP-Input process+friends,
RTR/IP-SLA will still be able to report the "real" RTT.

I'm not sure if RTR is available on the 2900XL (if you want to try, try
the command "rtr responder")
