Not exactly.  It's my understanding as from what's been posted on
this list in the past is that they simply do not put the new IOS
though the full battery of tests on the EOLed NPEs.  But, they
do check if they will boot.

Consider the warning along the lines of "OK, now we really need to set
money aside in the next budget cycle for a new NPE"

And don't plan on updating to a new release train, even if your
still maintaining smartnet on it.
