I set the interfaces to auto/auto and there were *almost* no errors overnight.

We always set the port speed and duplex, only if the other side doesn't support that (for example unmanaged media converters) we leave it to auto. We had cases in the past where devices got reloaded and when came back didn't negotiate properly (most often stuck in half-duplex). Those issues are sometimes quite difficult to spot. So we settled on hard settings.
