It mostly depends on your requirements.  I would avoid STP in general these
days.  MST and RPVST operate much more efficiently and converge faster
because of the RSTP standards.  VPLS has the added benefit of allowing link
and node protection as well as spanning the topology across a wide area.  It
really depends on what you are trying to accomplish.
