Yes, I've done this.

Good.  Depends what you are trying to do.

As an example, I've used it to allow a police department to monitor a 
radio channel from their IP phones, by sending radio audio out on to the 
network as multicast, setting up an xml service that allows them to tune 
in to this multicast group.

Typically want to have a good radio guy handy to get pinouts, audio 
levels, etc. correct.
