Once upon a time I was thinking the same: Eliminate the entire G.711
path by plugging FXS into the voice gateway so fax will go directly
between PSTN and FXS, never leaving TDM.
Har har.
The reality is that it's working *worse* than a new (non-L) ATA in a
fax passthrough Skinny setup on CM or CME 4.x. At least it does so
on my 3745. I've heard rumours that this is a design issue with the
3745 (it also has severe breakage when it comes to network clocking
from BRIs) and might be way better on a 28xx/38xx platform. Of course
*this* wasn't printed in the colorful handouts at the time the 3745
was new and we bought it...

The problem here is that some people have a thourough binding to the
fact that they can walk with a piece of paper to a fax machine and it
behaves like a copier. Not to forget that (for some odd reasons we techs
can only laugh about, but nonetheless) paper fax has different legal
quality than "computer fax". Welcome to a mad world.
