Jonathan,
I believe show voice call summary is a command relates to voice call. see below expression in IOS reference.
show voice call
To display the call status for voice ports on the Cisco router, use the show voice call command in user
EXEC or privileged EXEC mode.
 
If he wants to check the E1 interface is up or not, it has to be show controler e1 as I usually did it.
