[cisco-voip] vg224 - MGCP or SCCP?

Well,

I am currently dealing with a weird FAX issue with a VG224 in SCCP (stcapp) mode. SCCP (stcapp) only supports passthrough, not relay. It looks like I'm going to need to tinker with making one of the ports H323 or MGCP to see if that works better and fixes this FAX problem I'm dealing with. I am working with TAC on it and they are suggesting moving away from SCCP so we can try T.38 FAX Relay which is in the newer IOS versions to see if it fixes this weird FAX problem. I'm neutral on the suggestion until I see what happens and am waiting for some details back from TAC still before I go tinkering with a live system and not mess up stuff that is working fine (other FAX's, etc).

The FAX problem is, a FAX machine on the VG224 can FAX everyone fine except for one number. It can receive FAXs from that number though. A FAX machine attached to an ATA however can dial the number fine and have a good FAX, so theres something a little different with the passthrough on the VG224 in SCCP mode versus the ATA. The PSTN Gateway is a Cisco 2821 with 2 PRIs , MGCP controlled with fax relay disabled at the moment.

FAX's and VoIP are a pain still it seems. It either works or it is an adventure ....

Just wondering what others have used out there for
their VG224.

I'm not so concerned with features or call
survivability right now, but I'm more concerned with having faxes work while in
SRST mode. I'm guessing modem/fax passthrough is what I really
want.

On a side note, a number of people asked if you
need to buy a licence for a VG224. People have been saying no. But according to
this documentation, if you use the VG224 is SCCP mode, then you are required to
buy a licence.

Each FXS port that has SCCP enabled counts as a
single IP phone for licensing purposes. For example, if you register all 24
ports on a Cisco VG 224:
–For Cisco Unified CME, you need to purchase at least an FL-CCME-SMALL
  license.

–For Cisco Unified CallManager, the 24 ports count towards the 2500
  limit if you purchase LIC-CCM-4.X-2500.
