1.0 Overview
--------------
1.1 Overview of the Cisco Firmware Update CD
The Cisco Firmware Update CD Version 1.1.1
contains a collection of
firmware updates for Cisco MCS Servers.
Media Convergence 7835H2/45H2 Servers with
specific SAS hard disk
drive options installed may be affected. The
specific drive options
are listed below:
DG072ABAB3
DG072BB975
DG146ABAB4
DG146BB976
1.2 Limitations
The update program will find the
options listed above and only
updates the drive firmware as needed. The
update supports Hard Disk
Drive options installed in Cisco MCS
7835H2/45H2 Servers.
1.3 Level of Recommendation
A full tape backup should be completed and
verified prior to running
this or any other system upgrade.
This update is considered critical and is
mandatory for all SAS hard
disk drives with the Product IDs listed in
Section 1.1.
The update process should be performed in
a controlled environment.
Do not abort the installation of firmware
updates while they are in
progress. If installation is aborted,
unpredictable results may occur.
Do not disrupt the power supply to the
system during the upgrade
process. After the installation of the
firmware updates, the user must
power cycle the server as part of the reboot
process.

3.0 Installation and Setup Instructions
-----------------------------------------
3.1 Updating the Firmware
The Cisco Firmware Update CD will detect if
your server has installed
drives that require firmware updates.
If either the vendor of the host system
or the server model are
unsupported by the current version of
Cisco Firmware Update CD, then
the firmware update(s) installer reports an
appropriate message and
prompts the user to press any key to
initiate a reboot of the host
system.
If the firmware of the host system is up
to date, then the firmware
update(s) installer will report that, "The
host system is up to date.
No firmware update required" and prompts
the user to press any key to
initiate a reboot of the host system.
The main menu is displayed to the user
if there are some firmware
updates available to the host system.
The main menu offers five options from which
choose:
Option 1: 'Install firmware update(s)'
The firmware update installer displays the
install menu.
Option 2: 'View system information'
The firmware update(s) installer
identifies the hardware components
of the host system and the version of
the firmware installed.
The following information is presented to
the user:
a. Host system vendor name.
b. Host system server model.
c. BIOS-related information:
i. BIOS version.
ii. BIOS manufacturer.
iii. BIOS date.
iv. BIOS build level.
d. Network firmware information:
i. Driver.
ii. Version.
iii. Firmware version.
e. Storage controller information:
i. Firmware version.
ii. Model number(s) of the
disk(s) that are housed
in the host system.
Option 3: 'View available firmware
update(s)'
The firmware update(s) installer
identifies firmware update(s)
applicable to the host system based on
its hardware configuration
and displays a list of applicable
firmware update(s) which are
categorized into the following four
different categories:
a. BIOS - System ROM
b. Firmware - Remote Session Management
c. Firmware - Network
d. Firmware - Storage Controller
Option 4: 'Help'
The firmware update(s) installer
displays brief information about
the options that are available in the main
menu.
Option 5: 'Quit'
The firmware update(s) installer
terminates itself and asks the
user to press any key so that a reboot
of the host system can be
initiated.
From the 'Install firmware update(s)'
option on the main menu, the
following five options are available:
Option 1.1: 'Express Install'
The firmware update(s) installer
installs the firmware update(s)
that it has identified for the host
system.
Option 1.2: 'Custom Install'
Although this mode of installation is
similar to Express Install,
the user has complete control of the
installation here. The user
decides which category of firmware
components must be updated. For
each category of firmware update(s), the
user is prompted for his
choice whether to continue with the
installation.
Option 1.3: 'View available firmware
update(s)'
The firmware update(s) installer
displays firmware update(s) that
are applicable to the host system.
Choosing this option provides the
same result as choosing 'View available
firmware update(s)' option
from the main menu.
Option 1.4: 'Help'
The firmware update(s) installer displays
brief information about
the options available in the install menu.
Option 1.5: 'Return to the main menu'
The firmware update(s) installer displays
the main menu.
3.2 Other Instructions / Troubleshooting
3.2.1 After an update completes, the user
may boot the system using
the Cisco Firmware Update CD to
verify that the firmware has
been updated.
If the user updates firmware on the
host system and reboots the
system using Cisco Firmware Update
CD, the firmware update(s)
installer will scan the hardware
componets of the host system
and identify if any firmware
update(s) are pending. If there
are no updates pending, it reports
that, "The host system is
up to date. No update required."
and asks the user to press
any key to initiate the reboot
sequence. After pressing some
key, wait till the CD is umounted,
then eject it from it's
drive manually.
Please note that the firmware CD
will not be automatically
ejected from it's drive.
