[cisco-voip] DMA 4.2 to 6.x staging !!!

When the decision was made TCP/IP didn't have a stack for DOS5.0/Windows
3.1, you were more likely to be running IPX/SPX then TCP/IP!
Note Cisco is only using the first DNS RFC with 5.1.1 installer so
hostnames that were valid in Windows will fail with CallManager.
Customers won't understand why the old hostname worked, but the new
isn't valid when the hostname check is done.
For example 2kccm01 isn't a valid hostname because the old rfc didn't
allow a host to begin with a number, thus CallManager install will fail
when checking the hostname.
Perhaps this has been fixed in 6.1.1

That's because an _ is an accepted character in NetBIOS names which is
what the computer name is. they were not trying to follow DNS standards.
What I don't think is correct is that you can't go from an _ in the
name, use DMA to export the information and then change then name during
the upgrade process. I think this was a TAC person that didn't do enough
research and an engineer that just accepted what the TAC person said as
gospel. I would like to see something that says you can't upgrade if you
have a _ in the computer name.

This has to do with standard DNS naming. Microsoft in their infinite
wisdom allowed _'s even though they are not allowed in the DNS RFC.
Linux follows strictly to the DNS RFC which does not allow underscores
in names.

Is this _ problem documented somewhere on Cisco.com? I find it hard to
accept that you could not use an _ for the DMA export.

Please do not say that you had an underscore in your old hostname...
Because if you do, you cannot run DMA.
We ran into this a few months ago on a 4.1 - 6.0 upgrade and we ended
up having to export everything via BAT and reimporting... TAC said an
underscore means DMA cannot be used.
