[cisco-voip] Message button doesnt work in Unity 5.x

It's caused by the changes to the way phone services work with 7.x.
The directories and messages become services based (enterprise
paramters are no longer used). The release notes gives a decent
explanation of how the new features work. Long story short the
messages button now relies on a phone service called Voicemail. If
this service isn't present for some reason you get this error.

Downgrading the phone load just forces the phone back to the old
method and shouldn't be a permanent workaround.

We ran into this with the phoneload that came in 7.x in lab
environment. Downgrading the phone firmware fixed this for us. I
forgot what phoneload the system had on it when we had the problem.
