In all my conversations, the 7940s were considered 1st gen phones and then go up from there.
I really don't think anyone refers to the original selsius phones as 1st gen.

I was told no new features can be developed on 2nd generation due to limitation, so buy 3rd generation.
I like the 3rd generation myself, and haven’t touched a fourth generation phone yet, but iLBC codec holds great promise for bad wan links.
1st Generation VIP12/VIP30 (white phones, only did G711)
2nd Generation CP7940/7960/7935/7970/7920
3rd Generation CP7941/7961/7985/7936/7921
4th Generation CP7975/7965/7945/7962/7942 (Headset Hook Control, iLBC Codec support)

Any comments on 3rd gen phones, is anyone using them instead of 2 gen?

There have been a couple of comments on the list re: 7940s and 60s and EOL.
According to this: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/phones/ps379/prod_eol_notices_list.html they have not been EOL'ed just yet.
That being said, I'm not sure anyone would want to go out with a new deployment using them, but they are still supported.
I'm pretty sure the second/third gen phones are the way to go.
