I haven't done an alcatel, but I've done many other types of PBX's.
In my experience, there are some general rules that apply across most PBX's.
Rules of thumb:
1) Pretend the Cisco side is Telco:
-Have the Cisco be the "Network" side of the T1/E1 and provide clocking.
-Have the PBX be the "User" side of the T1/E1
2) Protocol varies per PBX. Since the Alcatel is already connected to the Voice Provider, I'd use the same protocol that you are using there. Cisco supports almost all of them.
3) the difficult part can be the call routing depending on the PBX type/features. (dial 9, don't strip, select trunk, 4 digit dial, etc).
Your questions:
- a 32 pvdm should be fine for an E1, but check the DSP calculator.
http://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/Support/DSP/dsp-calc.pl
-MGCP or H.323 will be fine.
-You can configure one protocol per port (this is done with isdn switch-type primary-(whatever) on the serial interface for the T1/E1.
-which protocol should you expect from the Alcatel? Dunno....i'd be googling/calling Alcatel.

Subject: [cisco-voip] problem in configuring a 2821 router to conect to aalcatel 4400 through a E1 card
Hello,
As anyone have already configured a router 2821 to work with a Alcatel 4400 trough a E1 card ?
I need to have 64 PVDM too only to this E1 card , right? In the end is supposed to have 30 channels on this connection .
What protocol should I use? Anyone had succefully configured with MGCP ?
I have a Wic 2 T1/E1 card - I have to have the 2 ports configured with the same protocol? Or can have 1 port configured with a protocol and other with another?
If someone have already configured could please send me an example (if it isn't ask too much :)).
What protocol sould I expect from the Alcatel 4400 E1 port? - It is connected to a primary of the voice provider.
Thanks in advanced,
Pedro
