Ryan, thanks for this answer, exactly what I need.  But what do I put in the external location, an xml file or does it have to be an ldap server or something?

  At some point we added the ability to specify the URLs (external data locations) at the device page.  I don't recall if it's in 4.1 or not but it's definitely in 4.2.
