[cisco-voip] Is the MCS-clone HP server parts list current?

I wonder how they test if the extra point two GHz works and what they do
when it fails, call Intel?
I think the QA dept should re-focus on Daylight Savings Time testing...

Jason,
What do you mean? It's not as if Linux doesn't support the different
processor speeds/types, it's the way Cisco specifically configures the
software itself so they can have an environment that has been tested
thoroughly by their QA department.

Be cool if CallManager 7x/8x software a hardware abstraction layer and
didn't care if CPU was 2.4GHz versus 2.6GHz, etc.

Yeah I'm not sure what you were looking for exactly. Cisco can't
tell you when you can or cannot buy a server from HP or IBM. All we
do is document the exact parts that make up the MCS servers so if you
wish to buy the equivalent from HP or IBM directly you can do so.
If HP or IBM wants to tell you a newer part is equivalent then that's
up to them but don't expect it to work unless each part number
matches exactly what's in the document we provide.
If Cisco is still selling the MCS server you are looking to duplicate
then I imagine we are still getting the parts from HP/IBM but that's
getting into supply chain logistics and I know nothing about that
part of the business.

My understanding is you can order non-MCS boxen at anytime, you just
have to make sure you have the *exact* specified parts list for Cisco
or you'll end up with a hair-pulling installation error.

So when can we order NON MCS servers?

You are correct in the server equivalency but the second link Jason
provided shows that server can only run 6.1(3) and the Windows CUCM.

I think you are incorrect Jason. "It is the configuration equivalent
of the Cisco MCS

able to run 7.0 on it.

One additional caveat, just to make sure you're aware of this gotcha.
If you order a brand spanking new server directly from HP keep in
mind that you may have to wait a while for a version of CallManager
to come out that actually supports that server hardware.
It is hardcoded in the CCM installer to check the machine model /
specs and give a go or no go on the install. If the server model is
newer than the version of CCM you're installling - the install will
fail. Not the greatest design in my opinion, but I suppose they did
it to ensure you're running on something that has been tested.
Before ordering hardware, always check the CCM software compatibility

Supported Servers for Cisco Unified Communications Manager Releases
The server you're looking at from the rest of the thread looks to be:
HP DL320-G5p
Which is only supported in CCM 6.1.3, and NOT in 5, 6.1.2, or 7.
(although it does have 4.X support)
Hope that helps.

communications applications. It supports up to 1000 Cisco Unified IP
Phones
on a single server and up to 4000 Cisco Unified IP Phones when clustered
properly. The required processor is an Intel E8400 3-GHz processor. No
specific memory configuration is required as long as 2 GB of memory is
provided. It is the configuration equivalent of the Cisco MCS

The feedback I hear on this list is that these parts are from 2006 era
and you shouldn't be buying them if you talk to HP directly...Who wants
a 2006 Lexus when they can get a 2009/2010?
I was under the impression that a new parts list and new MCS line will
be out June/July timeframe for CallManager 7.0(2)...
However I have no authority on this and shouldn't be deemed an
authority, just a guess on my part that a server refresh is past due...

I need this updated if it's not. I've got Cisco talking out of both
sides of their mouth. TAC says your list of parts *clearly* means that
the parts ordered aren't compatible and I checked against the HP server
parts list. Then the customer calls Cisco independently and they tell
him that the parts ordered *are* compatible.
