[cisco-voip] ATA Line Gain?

Hi Everyone
 
We have been told by one of our users that they are struggling to get credit card's through on a card machine connected to an ATA186 
 
The credit card company suggested upping the gain (I am not convinced that the line will be that noisy to cause an issue) but can't see if that is possible on the ATA.
 
Anyone any experience with these devices on ATA's
