what kind of phone is it?
how far away is it?

the vg224 is notorious for not being able to ring any of those old "mechanical" type ringers on old Red Phones and/or loud bells. and for not being a full 48v like the rest of the telephone world.

viking electronics has devices to increase loop length and ring voltage.

your other option is an FXS-E/DID which is "supposed" to feed more loop length and ring voltage. i'm getting one of those in next week or so, so i will be able to report back later.

that being said, i'm pretty sure i got similar results when I put my volt meter on their. i can do it again next week to confirm. but i think i got 38V up/down when ringing and the 5v when onhook. but i could be wrong.

Phone’s are not ringing, but offhook is showing -43V onhook. When ring comes in I see a voltage drop. The butt set is fancy and has a reading that shows 38V while offhook (hearing dialtone)

The VG224 data sheet show 50Vrms into 5REN. What will a volt meter show? I use a volt meter about once every 5 years…
