[cisco-voip] CUPS 8 Message Archiving

Hi Guys,

msg archiving with CUP8.0 can be performed in two ways:

1. Using an external postgreSQL db, which can run on a linux or windows machine. All msgs will be loaded into a table in this database. This is only a plain db, for auditing or other usage you'll need to have a script to read out the database entires to have a 'usable' output here. Important here, you'll need the msg archieiver service on CUP, which must be running for this. CUP can work even if this DB is temporary not accessable, for example, during network issues or something like that.

2. The other way is using an external server, which doesn't need the msg archiver service. So don't wonder that this service don't' come up. Facetime is one option, but not so scalable, depending on your environment, failover and HA is here VERY important:

a. Msg flow with external servers: IM Sender --> CUP --> external server --> CUP --> receiver of IM

b. This means, if the external server is NOT reachable, NO IM's can be sent in your network, because ALL traffic going over the external (e.g. facetime) server. I had also some issue's in the past between CUPC7 (SIP/SIMPLE) and XMPP (CUPC8, Miranda, etc) users when using the facetime server, so please check for this. Anyway, facetime for example allows you to do more than just put the IM's in a plain postreSQL db, for example, auditing, rules, rules for external contacts, whitelists, blacklists, LDAP integration for SSO, reporting about IM usage, etc. For facetime, you'll need a MSQL db for this in the background.

Agree that Facetime does quite a bit more than asked for in the original message, but apparently it can be used for the archiving piece as well. (I am merely relaying what was told to me by the BU... I haven't used the product.)

Also, the only approved database with CUPS 8 (for the group rooms and raw archiving) is postgresql. Supposedly, there are plans for Oracle support in the future, but nothing committed.

I believe these are two different things. CUPS 8.x should support IM ARCHIVING in that you can dump the IM's to a database which I think is MySQL. It does not do any reporting that is up to you.
Facetime does auditing, can Sam IM Steve? How long do Sam and Steve IM each other? What do they chat about?

In talking to a BU Engineer, he recommended we look at FACETIME IM Auditor. Product name may have changed looking at their www site.

I haven't implemented this function, just asked the question...

Anyone running CUPS 8 yet with Message Archiving? If so just curious what you are using to dump the messages to.

Thanks,
Jobe
