[cisco-voip] Fax on FXS problem

I did not have enough time to go to customer site so I sent an engineer
to site and opened a TAC case and the TAC reply that it is a bug:

CSCtc98074 PVDM3 only 29/3900 must not initiate, or respond to, Cisco
Fax Relay

Symptom:

A Cisco 2900 or 3900 series voice gateway, using only PVDM3 based DSPs,
will send, and respond to, requests to start Cisco Fax Relay. Cisco Fax
Relay is not supported on the PVDM3 hardware and calls that attempt to
use it will disconnect with "Cause Value = 172".

Conditions:

This happens on devices with only PVDM3 DSP resources.

Workaround:

Configure a fax handling method, fax relay T.38, fax pass-through, or
modem passthrough.

I will ask the TAC if they are going to solve it or it will be permanent
in the PVDM3 hardware.

Ahmed,

There is not a bug, this is how the 2900 operates with the new PVDM3's.
I opened a TAC SR and the engineer confirmed that fax relay was not
supported and I should disable it. I found the configuration info by
looking it up myself. If you search on the Cisco web site for
fax/modem relay you should find additional info.

I will give it a try and give you a feedback...do you have a bug ID or
TAC number??

Are you using a 2900 router? If so it does not support fax relay you
need to set if for modem relay. I had the exact same error before I
changed the configuration.

voice service voip

modem relay nse codec g711u gw-controlled

modem relay nse codec g711a gw-controlled

You also need to disable fax relay on the ccm-manager config

no ccm-manager fax protocol

We are using mgcp gateway and I also added this (not sure if it's needed
for H323)

voice service voip

modem relay nse codec g711alaw gw-controlled

Once I set these commands my faxes worked fine. I had a similar setup
fxs port going to telco PRI, all on the same router.

There are no VOIP legs involved in the call at all.

FAX machine>>>FXS port>>>PRI E1 "same router">>>>PSTN.

Dear all;

I have a strange problem here:

I have a h323 voice gateway with FXS connected to a FAX machine and an
E1 PRI port to the Telco; when connecting analog phone to the port calls
are working normally "in and out" when connect a fax I can receive faxes
but not send...although I am able to send faxes to a remote site over
the WAN but cannot use the local E1 on the router to send faxes...below
is the error I got from the debug
