8.0 introduced a new type of upgrade specifically for servers that aren't supported on the new version (most of the time is due to underlying OS updates and lack of drivers for old hardware).  The Bridged Upgrade will put the new version onto the server but the only thing you can do is take a backup and restore it onto the new hardware.

Unfortunately this still requires you to upgrade the older hardware but you can always switch back to finish the buildout of the new cluster once the backup is taken.

I guess this is going to be a big problem going forward with the linux os’s. Since you can’t always buy the same hardware 1,2 or 3 years later, what if the customer doesn’t want to upgrade or can’t upgrade due to 3rd party apps that are plugged into the cluster, but they may be forced to since the hardware they have to purchase (to replace the old hardware) will not support the old software.

No problems. I just checked the inventory (for Canada) and there were quite a few MCS servers available. Some fairly cheap. As long as the 7.0(1) DVD and software support it, it doesn't matter how small the server is, i.e. a 7916 should do fine. 
 
Don't forget to apply any service releases, etc. 
 
Oh, another approach is to ask the account team for something from their demo pool. That might also be an option.

I would also try to use different disks jus in case you need to bring the sub into production again. 
 
And consider buying a used server off the grey market. 
 
Cisco has refurbished equipment for sale as well.

That is certainly one idea. I could retire the Subscriber, rebuild it to a new publisher, DRR import the 7.01, then upgrade to 7.1.5. Defiantly a good idea.

Sorry, I realize now there was a bit more to your issue than just booting the new hardware. 

Could you take on of the old servers offline and build it new from v7.0.1, upgrade it, and then back up and restore to the new cluster?
 
That's one idea. 
 
You could probably buy a used server cheap too.

I have a quick question for the list. I have to perform an upgrade for my customer. They have old 7825H2 and H3 servers which are currently running CUCM 7.0.1
New hard ware has been purchased by them and we have been asked to complete the migration from their current server hardware to the new hardware. During this move we will move them to the latest stable release of CUCM 7.1.5
 
The process we were going to follow was to take a DRS backup for the current 7.01 system, restore to the new hardware with 7.01 installed, upgrade to 7.02 then to 7.1.5. However when I put the dvd of CUCM 7.0.1 into the new IBM MCS servers, it will not detect the hardware or any devices on the system. Only the keyboard and video display works. This leaves me to believe that since the 7.0.1 DVD was made back in 2008, the new IBM hardware drivers are not loaded on the install disk, and therefore the system can’t detect the drivers to allow the install to continue.
 
So I was wondering what everyone would do in this situation? Does cisco provide an updated 7.0.1 bootable DVD that can be used on the new servers? As DRS can only restore to the same version on the new server, we either have to:
1.       Upgrade the current live cluster to 7.1.5 or

2.       Work out a way to get the older 7.0.1 software on the new IBM MCS servers.

 
At all possible costs, we would like to avoid upgrading the live system to 7.1.5 on box, as the current system is pretty unstable. However this may be the only viable way forward.
 
Can anyone suggest any other ways of getting around this issue?
