[cisco-voip] Unity Connection 8.5 and G.722

I believe the information about PCM vs. G711 recording is in the design document
as well.

G.722 and G.711 are both 64kbps codecs so I imagine converting between the two
is a more trivial process than G.729<->G.711 and likely done on the fly using
internal software....but I didn't write the thing so I'm just guessing on that
bit.

Does Connection 8.5 have some software cpu transcoding g722 to g711 (recording)
or is Unity Connection expecting a external transcoding hardware (IOS) resource?
I always complained Unity 4/5x, UCCX was hardcoded to 1 codec at setup. I'm a
fan of codecs that can adjust like RTP-A, Skype, and usually sound great
regardless of link.

I normally use G711 for recording on Unity Unified 8x (with Exchange), some
people can detect the G729 quality and complain. Bandwidth is gigabit or
greater.

So next I need to find the Unity Connection 8.5 disk space usage/recording time
based on MCS model. Wonder which doc that is in....

According to the 8xcucdg.pdf (design guide for 8.x)...

Supported recording Codecs:

PCM linear
G.711 mu-law (default)
G.711 a-law
G.729b
G.726
GSM 6.10

So although it advertises G.722...it doesn't store it in G.722. You must choose
what codec is used for storage.

PCM has the best audio quality but it'll eat your HDD for lunch if you have a
voicemail heavy environment.

Can Unity Connection 8.5 take calls in both G.722 and G.711? (the data sheets
says G.722 is supported) What does it store the message as if you call in with
G.722 from a 7945? I don’t want any transcoding going on, so I’m assuming in
software it does some internal transcoding?

Or is it like Unity or UCCX where during setup you have to specify 1 and only 1
codec ? or is it like a phone where it has a list of codecs advertised?
