depending on the status of the phones you may *need* to install the .cop file to get the .defaults file that comes with that load. there are situations where that is the only file the phones will parse. to that end installing the .cop file is the only way to get (or updated) that file.

Should I download the COP file, and install it, and then change all my default loads back?

Should I download the Zip file, and just upload the SCCP45.8-5-2S.loads and *.sbn files?
