Commonly used in the 5ESS central office switch. Will see it in Lucent/Avaya as well as an option instead of N1 or N2 standards. A lot of my old 5ESS centrex customers that were using our ISDN consoles were on custom. We were able to move some of those customers directly into the Avaya PBX without any change on my product at all, just added the ISDN module in the Avaya PBX and set it for custom.

I'm trying to recall what switch type "isdn custom" is. That is what the carrier said the old Siemens is programmed for.
Going from a Siemens PBX to CallManager/IOS gateway.
