[cisco-voip] Migrating from CUCM 7.1.3 to CUCM 8.6.2

To my knowledge we've never actually removed support for any phone in CUCM.

For the 79x0 phones we definitely support them in 9.1. We just fixed a 9.x bug related to CFA on shared lines that only affected these phones.
As you pointed out the phones themselves are end of SW maintenance so you'll get limited troubleshooting and no bug fixes on them but the CUCM side is very much alive and well.

So a couple things I found...

http://tools.cisco.com/ITDIT/vtgsca/VTGServlet
Shows support for 79x0G for 8.6 but not 9.x

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/partner/docs/voice_ip_comm/uc_system/unified/communications/system/versions/IPTMtrix.html
Doesn't show anything other than 79x1 as far back as 6.x

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucm/compat/ccmcompmatr1.pdf
Lists a default load for 79x0G which would lead you to beleive it is supported.

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/voicesw/ps6788/phones/ps379/end_of_life_notice_c51-574072.html
Lists EO SW Maintenance 2011 and EO HW Support 2015

None of this paints a clear picture and I can see how some may be confused attempting to interpret this.

Any one have anything more concrete for 79x0 support for 9.x+... Love to hear from Cisco on this as to what the "official" unofficial stance is... :-)

Thanks
Ted

Interesting.... I'm actually taking the word of one of our senior presales engineers.... going to have to research that myself and find out where he is getting his information and/or why he's been preaching this... thanks for pointing this out this could save some deals for sure.

It does, I have plenty on 9.1 already. Granted it’s supported in that they work, not that TAC will do anything for you if a problem is isolated to be in those models. That however has been the same for a while, including 8.6, so I’m not sure what documentation you’ve been reading but it’s quite wrong. If you are a partner or in CUG his has been addressed in a couple of different briefings about 9.1.

I thought 9.1 supported 7940/60 phones?

We've proposed "drive to 9.x" to many customers recently and the biggest argument against this that we've hit was that most of our clients are running 79x0 phones which will not be supported, all of these clients budgeted for the upgrade, UCS and professional services but not the phones, even with incentives from Cisco this has been a giant hurdle. Most have decided to stop at 8.6 and will budget for phones next year.

I’m interested in migrating to CUCM 8.6.2 running on VMs considering that 7.1.x is getting closer to the end of support. I’ve been working to determine the appropriate process to follow, but have a question that is not addressed in the documentation that I reviewed. Both of our current servers are model 7835-H2, which is only supported for use in a bridge upgrade, not for production use. The system requirements for 8.6.x call for 4 GB RAM and 146 GB disks. Our servers currently have 2 GB RAM and 72 GB disks. Will I be able to use these servers for the bridge upgrade even though they don’t meet these requirements?
Thanks for any input.
