Not sure what you mean by fudging hosts file.

Per the IM&P/CUPS docs, you need either an SRV record for _cuplogin._
tls.domain.com or _cisco-uds._tls.domain.com (for 9.1 and higher) for
communication, or you can manually set the server names/IP in the jabber
client.  Using SRV records makes it very easy for configuration.
