[cisco-voip] cutting the cord... going wireless

I am assuming that by “wireless only” you mean using Wi-Fi for PBX extensions. Ditching the PBX and giving everybody cellphones would also be “wireless only” but probably only feasible for very small deployments. I use it at home. ;-)

Wi-Fi uses license-exempt radio spectrum, which means a Wi-Fi-only deployment would have a pretty gaping question mark in terms of how much reliability and consistency you could actually guarantee. It is a finite amount of shared bandwidth and you have no control over who you share it with or what they do with it.

In practice, there are probably decent deployments of VoIP over Wi-Fi that work well. But in theory, there is no way you could ever come up with specific reliability guarantees since the entire Layer 1 is not under your control and is inherently best-effort.

“It should be understood that, unlike licensed radio systems that are provided some assurance of interference-free operation by Industry Canada, licence-exempt radio devices operate on a strict ‘no-interference, no-protection’ basis in relation to all other radio systems. This means that licence-exempt radio devices are neither permitted to cause interference, nor can they claim protection from any that they may receive. It is for this reason that Industry Canada will not normally investigate reports of radio interference affecting licence-exempt radio devices.”

Subject: [cisco-voip] cutting the cord... going wireless

Has anyone deployed a wireless only voice deployment, either as a retrofit or greenfield?

I'm going to be leading a discussion that considers "cutting the cord" so to speak and one thing that will come up will be phones. I know that Cisco has a few(?) wireless options for desk sets, but considering the pervasiveness of mobile devices, maybe this isn't even an issue?

Any information or feed back would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
