ok. so i should have taken a few more steps. i can't tell if the person has IM&P activated from their profile, but at least there's an error message when i try to send them one. i can live with this.

My biggest concern is someone saying, "I sent Joe a message and they never replied"

Especially if I tell them that they can send messages while other Jabber users are offline.

How do they know that Joe doesn't have Jabber at all and can't play?

What's the concern? That end users enabled for and actively using Jabber will not know who in the directory is also enabled and actively using Jabber? Isn't the offline status "good enough" for said end users to ignore them? Or am I missing a bigger concern, or other deployment requirement?

Any quick way to find out whether a user has had IM&P enabled on a system? When I do a search and look at their profile, it shows a Chat (IM address) even though they are not enabled.

My concern (in the short term) is that until we enable everyone for this feature, people who are using it won't really know who has the tool and who doesn't.

I can start off by saying only those who have contact photo's are enabled, but in the long term, that might not work.

Thoughts?
