If I recall correctly, you can apply a patch during installs. This should allow you to add a subscriber to a cluster with a different bootable ISO but the current patch level file available.
I've done this on more than one occasion with CallManager.
That being said, imp could be different.
In addition I think there was a bug with early v9 files that wouldn't allow an install with upgrade so I was not able to test this out. I had to get a bootable ISO cut for me.
