[ednog] Ditching WINS

 One Item to think about.

Short name resolution.

For example, your domain could be

msft.wpi.edu, but your WINS domain could be WPI

(Our example is campus.bridgew.edu, and BSC)

Most of your users are probably used to typing WPI into any domain box,
and will have to be retrained to type your (Longer) DNS domain.

Of course, this is all assuming you have one domain.

Subject: [ednog] Ditching WINS

We're looking to completely shut off and disable WINS on our campus this
summer, and have everyone using active directory and DNS for name
resultion.
Has anyone else out there tried making this transition, and if so, would
you mind sharing how it went?
