No - that shouldn't hurt anything. I have used linear amplifiers on a
band that was "close" to the original one they were intended for
before now with success. I used a LK-500Z that was built pre-WARC
and I put it in the 7 MHz position but tuned it up on 30 meters and
it worked OK for me.

You are right. People HAVE modded the SB-200 and SB-220 for 160m.
I don't have the details.

Disconnect the ALC line!!!
I have done the same with other rigs and so long as you don't
massively overdrive the amplifier it will sound fine.

It's better to limit your drive, unless you can put some control or
voltage divider network on that ALC line.
