> --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --The GR-81 uses three tubes, a 35W4, a 50C5, and a 12AT7. Looking from
the top of the chassis, with the front panel up, the 12AT7 is in the
upper right, next to the tuning capacitor; the 35W4 is on the lower
left, next to the power transformer, and the 50C5 in on the lower right,
just to the left of the audio output transformer. The 35W4 is the
rectifier; the 50C5 is an audio amplifier/output and the 12AT7 is the
regenerative detector. The radio requires no tune up; there are no
adjustments anywhere in the unit. Once assembled, it was ready to
run...I found a similar experience to Chuck Penson's; it's fine if you
don't expect much. A good antenna is mandatory for virtually any
signal. The radio does it's best below 10mhz, and a good set of
headphones is really needed to hear the weak ones. It is a very typical
regen that thousands of young boys and girls made as their first radio.
I remember waiting for one for Christmas in 1967; my parents surprised
me by buying the "next step up" instead; a GR-64. I acquired my GR-81
about five years ago, finding it in the garage of an old ham and getting
it for a song. I'm very happy my parents bought the GR-64; there is a
world of difference between the two radios. In 1967, I think the GR-64
sold for $39.95 and the GR-81 for $24.95...
