Frozen, fractured ferrite slugs, HR-10....

I have an HR-10 plain I acquired a couple of years ago. I took it out
to tune it up and found the 40 meter occilator coil frozen tight. I
removed the coil--a rather tricky operation--and found the slug was
cracked. It's about 30kc off from where it ought to be; I found that if
I stick a metal allen wrench in the core, I can bring the unit into
tune, but I'd rather not sacrifice my allen and have it sticking out
the bottom of the unit...
The slug appears to be lodged in the middle of the coil--would this be
maximum or minimum inductance?
Ideas fellow Heathnuts?
