Inexpensive SWL recievers

Doug,

Although your question was about HeathKits SWL receivers, here is an
alternative.

You might consider hands on experience with building the Radio Shack AM/SWL
receiver Kit.  This is around $12.00.   TIt has 33 spring clips to hold the
parts together, so no solder worries. Uses 1 transistor for amplified detector
and two transistors as Audio Amplifier.  2-3 hours construction time.
Great fun and good listening.  There is also a $6.00 AM crystal receiver
available too.

Also look in September 73 issue,  green cover, the have the ulitmate GREEN
radio, that you can build using Toliet Paper cardboard tubes as a coil form to
wind 120 turns of #24 wire, and empty aluminum Coke Cans to make adjustable
variable capacitors, using a plastic Viewfoil as the insulator and cover with 1
width of sticky Aluminum metal tape  2 1/2 wide.

Some people remember better when they build with their hands.

Hello all;
I am looking for suggestions on what type of inexpensive Heathkit SWL
reciever(s) I could procure to pass around amongst some young scouts to
generate some interest in radio communications.  I have noticed several models
(GR64, SW717, etc.) but know nothing about any of them.  For example, what
modes do they recieve, and does anyone have a 'best bang for the buck'
recommendation?
