Doug:
I think it's a great idea to use Heathkits to introduce scouts to radio and to
the fun of buildng kits. Of the shortwave radios that Heath introduced, I'm
partial to the Mohican (GC-1) and the GR-78. Heath seemed to offer two tracks
of general coverage receivers: bare bones radios like the GR-54, GR-64, and
SW-717; and high end spiffy radios like the Mohican and GR-78. The latter two
radios are so classy, that they may count as "modern art".
If you want to take this effort the next step, Ten Tec offers a product line
of three shortwave receiver kits that the kids can actually build.
1054: 4 band regen, front panel but no enclosure. $24.
1253: 9 band regen, nice enclosure. $59.
1254: Synthesized superhet. Fancy. $195.
I wouldn't trade any of these for a Mohican, but the kids can build them, and
get their feet wet in actually building a kit. We did a school project with
some youngsters in a middle school ham club, in which every kid built the
1054. It's pretty spartan, though, and the 1253 makes a nicer project.
Ten Tec's web site is: "http://www.tentec.com/".
Have fun.
