SB-104 & SB104A

David:
        Thanks for the in-depth info on the 104/104A. It's good to hear from
someone who was there. I worked on a 104A for a friend and found it to be an
adequate (top notch for its day) design. The only sections that really needed
some help was the noise blanker and the connections on the boards. But then
most of the modern radios have NB's that don't work either! The only help for
the connections would have been gold plated connections. If you want to see a
*REAL* nightmare of solid state design look at the SBE-34. They made just about
everything do double duty with attendant unintended interactions and
compromises.

        It is no consolation that others besides my former medical equipment
manufacturer hurried things for the Christmas buying season. That one cost us
considerably in customer good will in 1988.

        As an engineer I agree that the engineers and techs did a fine job of
producing a complicated solid state kit.

<snip>
There were, admittedly many more circuit changes and updates on the
SB-104 that I haven't mentioned, but the fact of the matter is that, if
built carefully, the SB-104 was a pretty good radio.
<snip>
There certainly were design-related pitfalls, and my opinion was that
the SB-104 was certainly pushed to production for the 1974 Christmas
buying season too quickly; many of the problems discovered in the manual
and proofbuild stages were not caught or were not known about in time.
<snip>
Anyway, this is my 2 cents worth on the SB-104. Enjoy...I think the
designers and technicians in engineering at Heath of the SB-104 (whose
names I won't mention without their permission) did a pretty good job
given the design goals of such a complex radio in kit form.
