VL-2280 vhf amp. questions

hello all green machine fans:

please indulge me so i satisfy my curiousity...finally.

1. do you guys have any ideas why the VL-2280 is such a sought item by
collectors?
     (i do have one but i dont understand the desirability of an amp.
that produces about
     half the output of a modern "brick" and it doesn't  have a pre-amp.
either. what's so
     "special"?

2.  what are they really worth? ...."ballpark" market figure please. (no,
i'm not selling
      unless somebody has a nice sum of $$$ burning a hole in pocket for
a mint       VL-2280)

anybody know?
