That's exactly what I did, too; and at about the same age. My radio was a
little 6-transistor thing I bought during summer vacation at my Grandma's.
She didn't like me sitting in my bedroom all day listening to the radio,
though.

I even took a coil of very fine magnet wire and a couple of tiny plexiglass
insulators to school with me and strung a wire between a couple of short
Malaga olive trees on campus during lunch hour. Somebody pulled it down
after a few days, though.
