HR-1680 - Deaf, or is it just me?

I recently borrowed an HR-1680 from my brother. After some basic cleanup,
I set up the radio. It seemed somewhat deaf to me.

I went through the alignment procedure (as much as I could without the
card extender -- this means I couldn't peak up the 8 MHz wideband IF
filter.)

This radio receives OK, but it seems to be somewhat lacking in
sensitivity. In partcular, the S-meter is extremely stingy. The Crystal
calibrator on 80m only gives an indication a little over S9. And this is
with the sensitivity all the way up.

Any hints or tips on this? Thanks.
