Actually, they are available--or were about a year ago. I just called
Heath and ordered one so that I could upgrade a clock that did not have
the RS-232 interface. The IC is the same, with the same microcode; the
RS-232 code just resides at a different address. So the circuitry is
different to run code from the other address space.
