Keeping it clean

I've been off the reflector for the last few weeks due to a crashed
computer. I logged back in just in time to catch the WD-40 flap again.
(Yep, its been talked about here before)
I want to toss my two cents into the ring.
My first exposure with WD-40 was many years ago while shooting
competition in the military. I was using it and getting hang-ups after
a while with the pistol slide. An old armorer came by and told me to
quit using the stuff. It has a petroleum base that tends to gum up the
works of moving parts in a fine tuned gun. I quit using it and switched
to non-petroleum based products and even used them VERY sparingly.
Around the same time the guys in Vietnam were having nightmare jams with
the new M-16. It got some guys killed. About that time an outfit out
of Detroit came out with a "moly-lube" called "Dri-Slide". This stuff
went on wet and quickly dried and gave a fine lube surface that rejected
moisture. This seemed to do the trick. I ordered a case of the stuff.
Dri-Slide is still in business and can probably be found on the web. it
works great on pots, switches, and controls.
Later, I also experienced great results with an AmsOil product called
MP. The front of the can says it all...."Protects, Lubricates,
Penetrates and Displaces moisture. This uses a petroleum distillate but
sheds water. AmsOil also makes a batch of moly-lube products.
I am not a salesperson for either product. Just giving my two cents
about petroleum based products. I too agree that some of the fancy
stuff on the market does cost too much for what it is supposed to do. I
have taken apart many a front end on SB/HW VFO/LMO's and found the
petroleum had broken down, and "Gummed up" the works. I clean the parts
and recoat with a moly-lube product and end of tracking/drift problems.
This is especially true with tube driven gear that generates lots of
heat.
So I guess it really goes with "what works for you" but these are just a
few facts to think about. Almost like eating food nowadays.......you
have to read the lable
Theres my two cents.
