Frozen slugs et al

Hi Ray and Group:
   From your description, I suspect that the slug is probably cracked.
If this is the case, it will be nearly impossible to remove it by
twisting it out. I have had good success over the years by removing the
offending transformer, securing it carefully and slowly drilling out the
broken slug with a variable speed Dremel tool. Use a very slow speed and
allow lots of time. If care is taken, these things can usually be
drilled out without destroying the coil form. Once removed, a
replacement slug can usually be "liberated" from an old transistor
radio, etc. If the replacement slug proves to be a loose fit in the coil
form, cut a small piece off of a rubber band and insert in the coil form
to act as a shim for the slug.
