For OLD guys like me, we remember the days when there was a similar
thing used in the primary on an auto ignition coil. It was designed
to deliver a hot, high voltage spark when cranking the engine (ie,
cold) but to knock down the voltage once the engine was running
awhile - this was to minimize point pitting. One of the tricks you'd
use when your rings stated going bad and you had oil on the plugs
was to bypass this element, so you'd get a hot spark to hopefully
fire through the oil...
