DX-40/VF1 chirp?

Hello Heathens,

I got out my trusty old DX-40 and hooked it up. What a nice rig. I hooked
up a VF-1 VFO also, but the chirp is horrid. I could get away with it on 80
meters, but 40 and up it really sounds awful. If I had a fist full of xtals,
I would be tempted to just run it that way, but I have only one and it is
3722 Kcs.

I am cathode keying the VF-1 and DX-40 at the same time and am QSK. Sure,
cathode keying is not the best way to go, nor is keying the VFO. I thought
maybe I could try the VF-1 on a separate supply instead of running it off
the DX-40, but I am not sure that would tame it down that much.

Anyhow, was wondering what you folks might suggest. Sure would like to use
the VFO, but can't have it oscillating when the key is up.
