How do you fix IM-17 Batteries Corrosion?

Hi...
Just purchased an IM-17 off of Ebay and naturally it was DOA on my door
step! Opening the unit up, I found both batteries had literally
disintegrated into crystals. Literally. However the corrosion is largely
confined to the back of the board, and the rest of the IM-17 looks like new
(almost).

The back fourth of the mounting board is encrusted with greenish
corrosion. Even so it does not appear to have eaten through the lines of
connecting copper. Thinking I could at least arrest the corrosion, I have
sprayed Deoxit on this portion of the board.

Now my questions which I hope you can help me with are:
o Assuming I should remove the greenish corrosion, what is the best method?
o Since 8.4 volt batteries are considerably more expensive than 9 volt
batteries, what should I do to permit use of the lower cost (higher voltage)
battery?
o Are there any service bulletin improvements that I should do as long as
I'm in the mode of fixing up this little puppy?

thanks in advance for any help!
