6HS6

Hi John, Carl and all,
The 6HS6 is not that scarce. If you get on the Internet and use your
search engine for 6HS6, you'll get about four pages of 'hits'. One of
them will be ESRC who lists the tube for $5.00. Others have it from $6 to
$12. If you order from ESRC, make sure you request American-made:
otherwise they will send ProCom which are Chinese-made and not as
consistent in gain. All this from personal experiance. After a couple
back-and-forths, I ended up with Sylvanias which work well.
There was an interesting article in QST back when they were a tech
magazine (Feb'66) about noise figure, gain etc. From that article, I made
a spreadsheet that evaluates all the various pentodes used in SB gear.
The only close pentodes to the 6HS6 is the 6AH6 which has higher
grid-to-plate capacity and may oscillate or the 6HR6 which has differant
AGC characteristics and may be just as hard/easy to get.
This same spreadsheet led me to recommend the 6GM6 over the 6BZ6 in the
RFAmp of the SB-301 a year or so ago. Really makes a difference in that
receiver.
BTW, I doubt the replacement of the RFAmp will have much to do with the
audio quality.
Interesting subject -- more so than the price of a GDO.
