Plastic knobs, fungus and cleanup

I looked into this problem when I bought a receiver with pitted dull
bakelite knobs. A listmember on the BA list suggested BRASSO. So I tried
it. Put it on with a heavy paper towel and rubbed and rubbed. The knobs
came out looking shiny and much of the pitting had disappeared. Brasso is a
light abrasive. I may be able to get rid of all pits if I spend more time
on the knobs but I won't as they look fine now.

I was also warned about buffing. Sounds like it can give great
results but there is risk of damaging the knob or skirt by overheating the
bakelite or plastic, or breaking the knob if it flies out of your hand.
