Hi Jeff,
Following is an abstract on 'Gonset' -- info courtesy of
the "Boat Anchors Manufacturers" web page:
**********
The Gonset Company - of Burbank, CA - was started in the
1950's by Faust Gonset, W6VR. The most famous Gonset
radios were the Communicator series of AM transceivers for
6 and 2 meters -- the "Gooney Boxes." They were standard
issue for Civil Defense/RACES and disaster communication.
The Communicators went through several revisions up to the
Communicator - IV. The major competition was said to be
the Heathkit Sixer and Twoer -- the "Benton Harbor Lunch
Boxes."
The Gonset Company didn't survive the transition to solid
state, but Faust Gonset did. He reportedly sold his small
company to one of his suppliers and started an even
smaller one, "SBE," also located in southern California.
"SBE" -- Side Band Engineers -- marketed a miniature SSB
transceiver and accessory RF power amplifiers.
The Gonset Company was sold once again in the late 60s. A
decade later it had vanished. SBE reportedly went through
several ownerships and is now part of Raytheon Corp.
