The mechanical linkage to the two slide switches under the front bar
of the HW 101 is likely responsible for most of those lever knobs
breaking.
Look underneath the front to see the link -also use some deoxit or
similar
to get the slide switches free.
It's not frozen.

No idea on the 9 pin sounds like a user added device.
