6146's used in pairs

Greetings Heath Guys,

Other than some of the earlier radios, it seems that many (most)
Heathkit radios and other used a PAIR of 6146's in the final amplifier
section.  Other than the increased output, was there any significant
reason for a PAIR of tubes?

Or, where did the 100 watt output 'standard' start and/or why?  Perhaps
100 watts was a nice number to dvive an amp?  Or was it just a matter of
"keeping up with the Jones's".
