Using the HW-16 (Help!)

I have an HW-16 and HG-10B vfo I plan to use together.
My question has to do with the HW-16 not being a true
tranceiver, and keeping Xmit & Rcvr frequencies in
sync. I see no way to spot the vfo in receive mode,
spot does nothing until I key, but then I'm
transmitting. Is my vfo or hookup flakey, or am I
missing something? I don't trust blindly depending on
the dial calibrations, cause I know they are off some.
